Beef 2009 - Beef CRC - Beef Genetic Technologies

Beef CRC had a major presence at Beef 2009 in May, holding two seminars and a tour of the Belmont Research Station near Rockhampton.

It’s one of the biggest weeks of the year for the beef industry with more than 60,000 people turning up to enjoy the social and educational activities on offer.

Some 60 people made the journey out to Belmont to hear about some of the latest research being carried out by the CSIRO and the Beef CRC.

This included the
polled/horn work, the CRC’s bull project, the virtual fencing project, methane mitigation strategies and some of the CRC’s female reproduction work.

More than 100 people attended each of the Beef CRC seminars. Hans Graser, AGBU gave the audience a greater insight into the future uses of DNA marker technology while John Thompson, UNE, spoke to them about enhancing the current MSA model by including DNA markers for tenderness.Bill McKiernan from NSW DPI used the opportunity to unveil the ‘BeefSpecs’ calculator for the northern industry.

The original version of the calculator was only for Bos Taurus steers, but Bill and his team have been actively working to include data for heifers and Bos Indicus cattle. While there is still a lot of validation needed before the new tool can be officially released, the feedback from the audience was very positive.

PhD students
Emily Piper (UQ) and Peter McGilchrist (Murdoch) also gave impressive presentations about their work.
