Read about DNA markers in the cattle, dairy and human genome industries in the Beef CRC's Beef Bulletin magazine on DNA markers. Do they work? What are they? How are DNA tests used in the cattle industry.

Cattle producers will be able to take a blood, hair or tissue sample from their cattle and have it tested to see which genes it carries.

These genotypes, along with the phenotypes, will then be used to develop marker-assisted Estimated Breeding Values (EBVm) for specific traits.

A trial tenderness EBVm has already been developed as a result of the 'SmartGene for Beef' project.

More recently, a DNA test for the polled gene trait in Australian cattle has been developed by the Beef CRC and its partners.
