Feedlot Management

Feedlot Management - Beef CRC - Beef Genetic Technologies

The Australian beef industry sells products into a wide range of markets, some of which have quite sophisticated specifications with respect to fat content, fat distribution and fat colour. Consistency of supply is also a major factor in meeting market requirements. These factors have led to a major increase in grain feeding and a rapidly expanding feedlot industry. This has increased the demand for staff with a high level of skill in areas relevant to the industry's operations. Graduates from the unit in Feedlot Management are keenly sought after by lotfeeders.

The course is divided into 6 sections including:

* Cattle breeding and genetics
* Meat quality/meat science
* Growth and nutrition
* Health and welfare of feedlot cattle
* Feedlot waste management
* Feedbunk management

The unit is offered externally (with a 4-day residential school) and is tailored for people that are currently working in the feedlot sector or those studying agriculture, with an interest in beef production. Feedlot Management at UNE has been undertaken by students from universities around the world and feedlot personnel from throughout Australia.
