Why develop a focus?

It’s easy to be overwhelmed with the pace of change in business, life and society, and the number of things we could do.

We can be sidetracked by the range of technologies, ideas and recommendations being promoted to us each and everyday.

But every business is unique, with its own goals, ways of operating and circumstances.

The challenge is to discover which things will make the most difference in your business and life – given your goals and your context.

Without focus, we can often put a lot of time, effort and resources into doing lots but feeling we’re not getting anywhere — the wheels are spinning but there’s no traction.

The tools listed below can help you develop your focus.

Front-End tool
The ‘front end’ is the fundamental thinking and logic that gives a concept, project or event clarity.

A good ‘front-end’ clarifies thinking by describing the intention, context, needs, focus, target outcomes, and relevant values, principles and assumptions, in a simple, concise and logical way.

A good front-end also establishes a shared language by clarifying and defining key terms.

Having a specific focus can help to:

  • Set boundaries
  • Concentrate thinking and action to make a real difference on improving profit
  • Stop wasting time and resources doing things that don’t make enough of an impact on profit
  • Get more effect for effort.

A SMARTT focus helps in the planning and setting of goals.

The SMARTT acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Targeted, Timelined.
