Information packages for beef producers
Information packages for beef producers - Beef CRC - Beef Genetic Technologies
The Beef CRC is using a multitude of formats to increase public awareness. They include websites (Beef CRC, State DPIs, Livestock Library), State DPI extension staff, radio, print and TV media, Scientific Publications, DVDs, books and booklets, road shows, field days, EDGEnetwork courses, More Beef from Pastures training modules, MLA Meat for Profit Days, CRC Beef Profit Partnerships and CRC ‘Train the Trainer’ workshops. |
Why does industry want these information packages?
If Australian beef produces are to adopt our products they first must be aware of them. The beef industry also needs ready access to suitably trained extension staff and consultants to ensure that they are able to adopt the technology as easily as possible.
How will industry benefit from these information packages?
By giving the industry access to the information in an easy to use format will help them better meet market specifications more often. For example, the CRC’s information package surrounding feedlot performance gives backgrounders an understanding of what they can do to ensure cattle perform well in the feedlot. Backgrounders can employ such management techniques as yard-weaning, pre-boosting cattle prior to feedlot entry and handling cattle in a low-stress way.
Progress
'Science for Quality Beef' has already been widely circulated through industry, and demand for copies is still strong and a “growth paths” booklet is planned for release in 2009. Besides the research outputs, the book will also feature case studies involving producer advocates who’ve adopted the technology. It will look at what changes they have made as a result of the CRC research and how it has affected their long term productivity and profitability. Field days continue to be held with 75 planned for the 2008/09 financial year. These field days, roadshows and industry presentations will deliver CRC research outputs and their applications. Extension and industry personnel will be further trained at the northern ‘Train the Trainer’ planned for April 2009. The CRC continues to gain press coverage. The CRC will also have a strong presence at several beef industry events, including BeefEx in October 2008 and Beef 2009 in Rockhampton. The information packages are critical to the success of the CRC. The information packages will create the demand for the CRC products hence the commercialisation objectives of the Commonwealth Agreement will be achieved.
