Measures of Cattle Welfare - Beef CRC - Beef Genetic Technologies
| To enable beef enterprises and policy makers to counter criticisms of animal welfare concerns, they require robust, scientifically defensible measures and critical thresholds that define the welfare status of cattle when exposed to conditions that elicit a stress response. This project will develop those essential objective measures of cattle welfare and incorporate them in welfare assessment protocols and standards and guidelines. Industry use: Industry will use the CRC’s objective measures of cattle welfare primarily through voluntary or mandatory use of animal welfare protocols, standards and guidelines. Economic benefit: The impact of reduced market access arising from animal welfare concerns could be substantial. This research is critical for providing the Australian beef industry the objective measures it needs to ensure appropriate animal welfare. |
